Regional Networks
Over the past decade, many Africa countries have made strong progress on building and strengthening the governance systems necessary to support the legal basis for advancing compliance with and enforcement of environmental law. As recognized by UNEP’s Africa Environmental Outlook report, economic development in Africa is supported by the quality of each country’s natural resource base and countries cannot afford to lose their environmental assets through degradation. Sound environmental management and “green growth” must be integrated with poverty reduction efforts.
While most countries in the region have environmental protection laws, many government agencies face technical and logistical challenges in implementation of those requirements. INECE’s networking activities offer valuable opportunities for strengthening the capacity of local government officials and enforcement staff to address a broad range of environmental problems.
