East African Network on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (EANECE)
On 6-7 May 2010, delegates from countries in the East Africa region, along with environmental compliance and enforcement experts from the international community, gathered in Nairobi, Kenya, for the Launching Conference of the East African Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement.

The proposal for EANECE builds on commitments to explore opportunities for regional networking in Africa made during INECE’s 8th International Conference held in April 2008 in Cape Town, South Africa.

Report of the Executive Workshop on Environmental Compliance & Enforcement held at the Kenya School of Monetary Studies, Nairobi, Kenya from 3-5 May, 2010.

Prior to the May Conference, on 31 March 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority convened a Workshop for the Launch of a Kenyan Chapter of a Proposed East African Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (EANECE).  The workshop brought together Kenyan environmental authorities to explore interest in and opportunities for cooperation in the field of environmental compliance and enforcement in Kenya.

Mr. Durwood Zaelke, Director of the INECE Secretariat, presented remarks on the history of the International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (INECE) and discussed lessons learned from existing regional environmental compliance and enforcement networks, including the Maghreb Regional Network (NECEMA) and the Arab Regional Network (ANECE). INECE EPC Member Donald Kaniaru delivered an informative presentation on “Environmental Law: opportunities for compliance and enforcement cooperation and networking in East Africa.”
